In month 7 of the Indigo Software SEO campaign, the company's community manager posted a detailed answer to a specific question in a relevant industry subreddit. The answer was 380 words. It opened with a direct answer to the question in the first sentence, included two named statistics with sources, and gave a specific real-world example from the company's own implementation. No links to the company website were included in the post body.
The answer earned 52 upvotes within 18 hours. Three days after posting, we were running a routine AI citation check in Perplexity and found the Reddit answer appearing as a cited source for a query related to the specific question the post had answered. The Perplexity citation appeared before the same content was indexed in Bing and before any backlink to the thread existed.
This confirmed two things from the Peec AI research that had previously been theoretical for our campaign. First, Perplexity searches the live web in real time and can surface new content within days of publication rather than weeks. Second, upvotes function as a quality signal that Perplexity's retrieval system actively uses. The same answer with 5 upvotes would not have earned the citation. The community validation was the mechanism.
The 72-hour citation timeline from Reddit was the fastest any piece of content in the campaign earned an AI citation. Blog posts took 2 to 4 weeks on average. LinkedIn posts took 1 to 3 weeks. Reddit with strong community validation was faster than either.
This was the result that most changed how I think about content distribution for AI visibility campaigns. We had been treating Reddit as a secondary platform to support content that would eventually earn citations via the main site. The 72-hour Perplexity citation from a single well-written Reddit answer changed that priority order. Reddit with upvotes is now my recommended first step for any new AI visibility campaign, ahead of blog content and ahead of LinkedIn. Perplexity indexes it immediately. The upvote signal does the quality filtering. And the answer lives in a community context that Perplexity treats as inherently credible. Build the Reddit presence before you scale anything else.
