OpenAI confirmed on April 21, 2026 that CPC ads in ChatGPT are live for US advertisers with bids between $3 and $5 per click. Paula Hijosa, AI and performance lead at Space and Time, told Digiday: "Our approach to paid ads will be informed by our GEO expertise, which we already apply to help clients structure content that is clear, authoritative and machine-readable, so AI systems can accurately understand brands and surface them in relevant conversation."
Chris Pearce, managing director at Greenpark, described the parallel directly: "ChatGPT Ads will reward brands that already have strong AI trust, category authority, and AI-ready narratives. Just like SEO and PPC work well together when considered holistically, the duality of organic LLM visibility and paid ads will have to be planned and executed as one."
The pattern is identical to what happened with Google Ads in the early 2000s: brands that had built organic search presence before Google Ads launched had lower cost-per-clicks because their quality scores were higher. AI trust and citation frequency appear to be the equivalent of quality score in the ChatGPT ads ecosystem. Brands without organic AI citation presence bidding against brands with established citation authority will pay a premium for equivalent visibility — the exact organic presence my free Claude SEO audit scores you on.
I am not recommending clients spend on ChatGPT ads yet. The attribution model is unclear, CPM prices are declining (from $60 to $25 in some categories), and the audience intent framework is still being figured out. But I am recommending every client build organic AI citation presence urgently, not because ads are coming, but because the content and platform work that produces organic citations is the same infrastructure that will generate quality scores when paid AI search matures. The brands that wait for the paid channel to prove ROI before building the organic foundation will be 12 to 18 months behind the brands that built the foundation now.
