ChatGPT's web search capability, which powers its ability to retrieve current information and cite sources in responses, is built on Bing's index. Not Google's. A website can rank number one in Google for its target keywords and be completely invisible to ChatGPT's retrieval system if it has never been submitted to Bing Webmaster Tools.

Most SEO workflows are built entirely around Google Search Console, Google Analytics, and Google's crawling signals. Bing Webmaster Tools submission is treated as optional or skipped entirely. As ChatGPT's search market share grows and more B2B professionals use it for vendor and service research, this Bing indexing gap is becoming a measurable visibility problem rather than a theoretical one.

The fix takes 15 minutes. Submit your site at bing.com/webmasters, verify ownership, and submit your sitemap. Then check site:yourdomain.com in Bing to confirm your key pages are indexed.

I have now made Bing Webmaster Tools verification the first technical check in every new client onboarding audit. It was missing on 7 of the last 9 sites I reviewed. Everyone of those clients wanted better AI search visibility. None of them were in Bing's index properly. This is the most commonly missed prerequisite in every AI SEO guide I have read, including my own early work on this topic. Check it before anything else.
