After OpenAI enabled location sharing in ChatGPT in April 2026, I ran a structured test: searching "best SEO consultant for B2B companies" with location context set to three US cities where I have clients or professional connections. The results were consistent across all three locations and revealed a clear pattern about which signals drive local AI service recommendations.

The consultants appearing in ChatGPT's location-aware responses shared three characteristics regardless of their Google search rankings. First, their Bing local presence was complete and verified, confirming the mechanism: ChatGPT retrieves from Bing's index. Second, they had recent review activity on G2, Clutch, or Trustpilot with responses to reviews visible. Third, they had published LinkedIn content within the last 30 days that mentioned specific industries or client types, which aligned with the "B2B companies" qualifier in the query. These are the exact signals I work on in every SEO consulting engagement.

Notably absent from the ChatGPT results: several consultants ranking in Google's top 3 for local SEO consultant queries in those cities. Their Google rankings were strong. Their Bing presence, review velocity, and LinkedIn publishing were all either weak or absent.

This test confirmed what the research data predicts but seeing it in a real query output makes the implication concrete. Google position 1 does not transfer to ChatGPT position 1. They are parallel visibility systems requiring parallel optimization. The three signals that appeared to drive ChatGPT local recommendations in my test (Bing verification, active reviews, recent LinkedIn content) are exactly the signals I have been documenting in the Indigo Software case study as the foundational AI visibility stack.
