Google IO 2026 ran on May 19 and 20 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. The central message from Liz Reid, VP and Head of Google Search, was not subtle: AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly users, queries have more than doubled every quarter since launch, and the search box itself is undergoing what Google calls its biggest upgrade in more than 25 years.
The redesigned search box now supports longer conversational queries, follow-up questions, and multimodal inputs including text, images, files, videos, and open Chrome tabs. Voice is a first-class input across Search, Gemini, Gmail, Docs, and Workspace tools. Gemini 3.5 Flash became the new default model powering AI Mode globally as of May 19, surpassing Gemini 3.1 Pro on coding, agentic, and multimodal benchmarks while running approximately four times faster on output tokens per second.
Five announcements from the keynote are directly relevant to anyone managing search visibility. Search agents, called Information Agents, launch this summer for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. These are background agents that monitor the web continuously and deliver synthesized updates on topics you specify. Universal Cart launched as a Gemini-powered agentic shopping layer that works across Google Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail simultaneously. SynthID and C2PA content verification expanded to Search and Chrome, enabling users to check whether any image, video, audio, or text was AI-generated. Personal Intelligence expanded to nearly 200 countries and 98 languages without a subscription requirement. And on May 21, Google launched the May 2026 core update, the second core update of 2026, timed directly alongside the IO announcements.
The timing of the core update alongside IO week means ranking volatility over the next two weeks will overlap with the model and interface changes Google also announced. Marie Haynes connected the timing directly: the core update makes sense because Gemini 3.5 Flash is now powering the AI features of Search. Your GSC baseline should be performance from before May 21 compared against post-rollout performance after the update finishes in approximately two weeks.
Google IO 2026 is the clearest signal yet that AI Mode is not an experiment. One billion monthly users and doubling queries every quarter means AI Mode is now the primary search surface for a significant share of your target audience. The search box redesign supporting conversational, multimodal, and voice inputs also means short keyword queries are no longer the primary optimization target. The B2B buyers in the US and UK that I work with are already using AI Mode for vendor research. If your content is not structured for AI citation and your robots.txt is not explicitly allowing ChatGPT-User and related AI crawlers, you are invisible in the channel that matters most right now.
