As of October 2026, the best Claude tools for SEO come in three layers: Agent Skills that teach Claude a repeatable SEO workflow (such as my 8 free SEO skills, AgriciDaniel's claude-seo and SE Ranking's seo-skills), MCP servers that give Claude live data (Search Console, GA4, DataForSEO, Ahrefs, Semrush), and Claude's own web search, Projects and Claude Code.
Pick a skill for the method and an MCP server for the data. I checked every third-party tool below on 23 October 2026 against its official repository or vendor documentation, and each row of the comparison table links to that source.
What are Claude skills, and how do they load?
A Claude skill (Anthropic's name is Agent Skills) is a folder containing a SKILL.md file: YAML front matter with a name and a description, then plain-language instructions, plus optional scripts and reference files. According to Anthropic's Agent Skills documentation, a skill loads in three stages:
- Metadata, always: about 100 tokens per skill (its name and description) sit in context from the start, so installing several skills costs little.
- Instructions, when triggered: Claude reads the body of
SKILL.mdonly when your request matches the description. - Resources, as needed: bundled files are read only when referenced, and scripts run with only their output entering the context window.
Where a skill lives depends on the surface, and custom skills do not sync between surfaces:
- Claude.ai: uploaded as a zip under Customize > Skills, with the "Code execution and file creation" setting turned on.
- Claude Code: folders on disk, in
~/.claude/skills/for all your projects or.claude/skills/for one repository, or installed as part of a plugin. - Claude API: uploaded through the Skills API (
/v1/skills) and run with the code execution tool.
A skill is know-how: it tells Claude how to do a job. An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server is access: it gives Claude tools to read data from Search Console, GA4 or an SEO platform. The strongest setups pair the two, which is how SE Ranking built its skills on top of its own MCP server.
What are the 8 free Claude SEO skills on kulbhushanpareek.com?
I built and published eight free Claude SEO skills as standard SKILL.md folders, with install steps for both Claude.ai and Claude Code. They work on data you supply (page HTML, a Screaming Frog export, a Search Console CSV or a sitemap), so they need no API keys. Three include a small Python helper that uses only the standard library and makes no network calls. You can download all eight in one zip for Claude Code, or each one separately for Claude.ai.
- seo-technical-audit: audits a page's technical and on-page SEO from its HTML, URL or a Screaming Frog export and returns a PASS/WARN/FAIL table with a fix for each issue.
- seo-keyword-clustering: groups a seed keyword or keyword export into intent-based clusters, each with a primary keyword, URL and content format.
- seo-content-brief: builds a writer-ready brief covering search intent, outline, questions to answer, internal links and E-E-A-T evidence.
- seo-schema-markup: generates or audits JSON-LD (Article, Organization, Person, Service, LocalBusiness, Product, BreadcrumbList, FAQPage) from facts shown on the page.
- seo-internal-linking: finds orphan pages, weakly linked pages and anchor-text problems, then proposes new links with anchor text.
- seo-gsc-quick-wins: finds Search Console queries at average position 8 to 20 with 50+ impressions and recommends title, meta and content changes.
- seo-geo-citation-audit: scores each passage for how easily AI answer engines can quote and cite it, then rewrites the weak ones. It is an editorial review, not a measure of whether the page is cited today.
- seo-content-gap: compares your page with 2 or 3 ranking competitors and lists missing topics, questions and entities to add, expand or skip.

Which Claude SEO tools do AI engines cite?
I track 10 B2B buyer prompts on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity every week, with web search on. In the 16 answers to "What are the best Claude skills or tools for SEO?" between 24 September and 12 October 2026, 12 cited at least one GitHub repository, and AgriciDaniel/claude-seo appeared in 9 of them. ChatGPT cited no GitHub repositories; Anthropic's own pages appeared in all four of its answers. For this topic, a public repository with a clear README is the format the engines reach for.
Which built-in Claude features help with SEO?
- Web search and web fetch: search answers come with citations, which suits competitor and topic research. Fetch reads a specific URL, but Anthropic's documentation says the web fetch tool does not support pages rendered with JavaScript, so a page that needs JavaScript to show its content may look thin to it.
- Projects: one project per client or site holds the files and instructions (brand facts, style rules, last month's exports) that every chat in it starts with.
- Claude Code: the strongest surface for SEO work that touches files. It runs skills, MCP servers and scripts against crawl exports, logs and site code, and can repeat the same job on a schedule.
How do you choose the right Claude SEO setup?
- No paid SEO tool: start with web search, the eight free skills and a Search Console MCP server. My guide to connecting Google Search Console to Claude walks through the mcp-server-gsc setup with a service account.
- You already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush: connect its official MCP server before adding anything else, and watch your API units, because every call Claude makes is metered against your plan.
- You need SERP or backlink data without a subscription: use DataForSEO's pay-as-you-go API through its MCP server.
- You only use Claude.ai: choose packs that upload as zips, such as mine or SuperSEO. Plugin-first packs such as claude-seo are built for Claude Code.
- You prefer prompts to installs: my 47 Claude AI SEO prompts and the Claude SEO audit playbook cover the same jobs as copy-paste text.
Whatever you install, check the output against the source data before acting on it: a skill makes the method consistent, not the data correct. For an independent baseline, run the page through my free 31-check SEO + AI audit tool before and after the changes.
How do you install a Claude skill in Claude.ai and Claude Code?
In Claude.ai
- Go to Settings > Capabilities and turn on "Code execution and file creation". On Enterprise plans, an Owner must enable skills for the organisation first.
- Download the skill as a zip. The folder inside must carry the skill's name and contain
SKILL.md. - Open Customize > Skills, click "+", choose "Create skill", then "Upload a skill", and upload the zip.
- Make sure the skill is switched on, then ask for the task in plain language. Claude loads the skill when your request matches its description.
These steps follow Anthropic's help centre article Use skills in Claude (updated 22 September 2026), which lists skills on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.
In Claude Code
- Unzip each skill into its own folder:
~/.claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.mdfor all projects, or.claude/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.mdinside one repository. - For a plugin-based pack, add its marketplace and install it. For claude-seo that is
/plugin marketplace add AgriciDaniel/claude-seo, then/plugin install claude-seo@agricidaniel-claude-seo. - Claude uses a skill when it is relevant, or you can call it directly with
/skill-name. New skills are picked up without a restart; if the skills folder did not exist when the session started, run/reload-skills.
Adding an MCP server
In Claude.ai, go to Customize > Connectors, click "+ Add", choose "Add custom connector" and paste the server URL; Free accounts can add one custom connector. Ahrefs and Semrush can also be added from Claude's connector directory. In Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url>, for example with Semrush's endpoint https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp, then type /mcp to sign in. If you log in to Claude Code with your Claude.ai account, connectors you added in Claude.ai appear there too.
Is it safe to install third-party Claude skills and MCP servers?
Treat them like software. Anthropic advises using skills only from trusted sources, because a malicious skill can direct Claude to run code or call tools in ways its description does not mention, and its custom connector guide warns that malicious MCP servers may include hidden instructions.
- Read before you install: open
SKILL.mdand every script, and look for network calls, file access or instructions that do not match the stated purpose. - Start read-only: leave write tools off. mcp-gsc ships with property changes and sitemap deletion disabled, and the GA4 server needs an explicit flag for its one write tool.
- Keep API keys out of skills: use OAuth where it is offered (Ahrefs, Semrush and DataForSEO's hosted server) or environment variables, never a key pasted into
SKILL.mdor a shared.mcp.json. - Cap spend: Ahrefs MCP keys created through OAuth default to 200,000 API units a month per key; set a limit wherever a vendor allows one.
- Limit Search Console access: add a service account only to the properties it needs.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Claude skill and an MCP server?
A skill is a folder of instructions (a SKILL.md file plus optional scripts) that teaches Claude how to do a task, such as an SEO audit. An MCP server connects Claude to a tool or data source, such as Search Console, Ahrefs or Semrush. Skills supply the method and MCP servers supply the data, and many SEO setups use both.
Do Claude skills work on the free plan?
Yes. Anthropic's help centre (updated 22 September 2026) lists skills on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, with the 'Code execution and file creation' setting turned on. Free accounts can also add one custom MCP connector.
Is there an official Google Search Console MCP server for Claude?
Not that I could find on 23 October 2026. Google's googleanalytics GitHub organisation publishes an experimental Google Analytics MCP server, but the Search Console servers are community-built, such as mcp-server-gsc and mcp-gsc, both MIT-licensed. Ahrefs' MCP server also exposes Search Console data for Ahrefs customers.
Is there an official Semrush MCP server for Claude?
Yes. Semrush documents an official hosted MCP server at https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcp and lists an app in Claude's connector directory. It covers the SEO API, the Trends API and read-only Projects data, and uses API units from your Semrush plan (checked 23 October 2026).
Do I need Claude Code to use SEO skills?
No. Skills packaged as zips, including the eight free SEO skills on kulbhushanpareek.com, upload to Claude.ai under Customize > Skills. Some packs, such as claude-seo, are built as Claude Code plugins, and Claude Code is the better surface when the work involves large exports or repeat runs.
The question that matters most for any Claude SEO tool is where its data comes from. A skill makes the method repeatable, but it is only as good as the export or API behind it, which is why my eight skills run on data you supply, such as your own Search Console export, with no API keys. If you already pay for Ahrefs or Semrush, their official MCP servers are the natural next step; just watch the API units. One pattern from my weekly tracker is worth knowing before you choose: 12 of 16 AI answers to this exact question cited a GitHub repository, so the engines favour tools with a public, well-documented repo.
